“If you want a thing done well, do it yourself.”

Are you tired of scrolling through ingredient lists full of things you can’t pronounce? One of the most empowering ways to embrace a natural lifestyle is by creating your own personal care and home products using the pure power of essential oils.

It’s easier (and perhaps even more affordable) than you think! From nourishing facial oils to refreshing room sprays, let’s dive into how you can become a master blender in your own home.

The Basics: Dilution is Key

Before we jump into the recipes, remember the golden rule: Always dilute essential oils in a carrier base. For skin application, the carrier (like fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil) ensures the essential oils are safely absorbed and don’t cause irritation.

Disclaimer:

Be sure to research/review the safety precautions associated with each essential oil that you use and be aware that some people can have sensitivities to certain oils so do a small skin patch test if using an essential oil for the first time. The same essential oils you can use may not be safe for children or pets.

Now for some of my favorite DIY essential oil recipes!

1. Nourishing Facial Oil

Restore, rejuvenate, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. I personally LOVE the way this makes my face look and feel.

Ingredients:
3 oz jojoba oil
1 oz tamanu oil
70 drops Anti-Age Essential Oil Blend

Mix well and massage a small amount onto clean skin morning and night.

2. Beard Oil Blend

Keep that beard and skin beneath moisturized and soft. My husband’s scratchy beard is MUCH more touchable when he uses this!

Ingredients:
5 drops cedarwood essential oil
5 drops black pepper essential oil
5 drops Frankincense essential oil
1 oz sweet almond oil
1 oz jojoba oil

Mix well and massage a small amount through the beard and into the skin underneath.

3. Roller blends

Roller bottles are perfect for on-the-go application. A 10 ml roller bottle is ideal.

  • It is Well Blend: Fill bottle with jojoba oil. Add 4 drops Lavender, 4 drops Orange, and 2 drops Frankincense. Apply to pulse points when you need a mood boost.
  • Headache Blend: Fill bottle with jojoba oil. Add 2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Peppermint, 2 drops Frankincense, 2 drops Rosemary, and 2 drops Helichrysum. Apply to temples, forehead, and back of the neck at first signs of a headache.
  • Pain Relief Blend: Fill bottle with jojoba oil. Add 2 drops Frankincense, 2 drops Helichrysum, 2 drops Wintergreen, 1 drop Peppermint, 1 drop Lavender, 1 drop Black Pepper, and 1 drop Clove Bud. Massage into painful areas.
  • Cramp Relief Blend: Fill bottle with jojoba oil. Add 4 drops Lavender, 4 drops Clary sage, 1 drop Rosemary, and 1 drop clove bud. Massage into lower abdomen for relief of menstrual cramps.
  • Germ Destroyer Blend: Fill bottle with jojoba oil. Add 6 drops of Germ Destroyer Essential Oil Blend. This is a kid safe blend. Can be applied to the chest to boost immunity against germs. We use it on everyone in the family if anyone feels under the weather. We rarely get sick.

4. Body Spray

Skip synthetic fragrances and create a signature scent.

  • Ingredients: 2 oz glass spray bottle, 3.5 oz Distilled Water, .5 oz Witch Hazel or high-proof alcohol (to help emulsify the oils).
  • Essential Oils: Add 15-20 drops total of your favorite blend. I personally love the Lavender, Orange, and Frankincense blend I call “It Is Well”.

Shake well before each use and mist lightly over your clothing.

5. Wool Dryer Ball Blend

Help keep that laundry fresh and smelling clean without compromising! I just keep my favorite blend of essential oils in a labeled dropper bottle near the washer and dryer and apply 2-3 drops to each natural wool dryer ball before starting the dryer with a load of clothes. I personally use a 50/50 blend of Lavender and Lemon.

6. Refreshing Room Spray

A quick spritz can neutralize odors and change the mood of a space. I spray my bedroom every morning and my room always smells so good and gives me a sense of peace and contentment every time I enter.

  • Ingredients: 4 oz glass spray bottle, 3 oz Distilled Water, 1 oz Witch Hazel or Alcohol.
  • Essential Oils: 30-40 drops total. I use approximately 12 drops Lavender, 12 drops Cedarwood, 8 drops Orange, and 8 drops Frankincense.

How to Use: Shake well and mist high into the air OR I usually turn my bed covers down first thing in the morning and spray my sheets and my area rug. I let my bed air for an hour or so and then make it. When I turn the covers back to get in bed at night, the sheets always smell fresh and lovely.

The world of DIY essential oil blending is vast, rewarding and fun. It allows you to customize every product to your exact needs, preference, and scent profile. All you need is a few quality essential oils, carrier oils, and glass containers to get started!

What product are you most excited to try making first—a personalized facial oil, refreshing room spray, or a few handy roller blends? Do you have a favorite essential oil or blend? What do you use essential oils for? What would you like to be able to add to your homemade products list? Let me know in the comments!
