“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”

Anne Lamott

In the buzzing world of content creation, it’s easy to get swept up in the constant current of deadlines, new ideas, and the ever-present “what’s next?” We pour our energy into crafting posts, engaging with our audience, and keeping the blog or socials humming along. And while that passion can be wonderful, it’s important to remember that we are more than just our latest post or the amount of feedback we get on social media.

Lately, I’ve been feeling that pull – reminding me that there are other essential aspects of my life that need attention. It’s a challenge I think many of us face, especially when we are doing something we are passionate about, like myself with this blog. How do we carve out space for the vital things that don’t directly contribute to our analytics, but contribute immeasurably to our well-being and growth?

The Non-Negotiables: Health First

For me, a significant part of this realization has centered around my health. It’s the foundation upon which everything else is built. If I’m not taking care of my body and mind, the quality of my work, my energy levels, and even my enthusiasm for the blog will inevitably suffer.

This means consciously scheduling in time for exercise, proper meals, and adequate rest. It’s not about finding extra hours in the day, but often about re-prioritizing existing ones. It might mean taking a break from researching and writing blog posts, or making sure I cook nourishing meals instead of grabbing something quick and convenient. It might mean going to bed as soon as the kids are down for the night and leaving dirty dishes in the sink until tomorrow. Alternatively, it might mean staying up late just to watch the northern lights with my horses and a friend. It’s about listening to my mind and body and giving myself what I need to function optimally.

Equally vital is dedicated, focused time with my kids. In the midst of the pressure to “keep up with Joneses” on socials and blogs, it’s far too easy to be physically present but mentally miles away, thinking about the next blog post, email replies, or social media insights. I need to silence the notifications, and truly be with them—whether it’s playing Uno, reading a bedtime story, or just enjoying a meal with my family. These moments are fleeting, and they deserve my full attention. This focused time away is not a distraction; it’s an essential part of refueling my purpose.

Beyond the Blog: Exploring New Horizons

But there is more to it as well. We all have other interests, hobbies, and projects that spark joy and offer a different kind of fulfillment. For me, these are ideas, creative endeavors, and learning opportunities that might not directly relate to this blog, but contribute to my overall growth and health.

Perhaps it’s diving into a new skill, spending time on an art project, writing or illustrating a book, horseback riding, or even just dedicating an afternoon to reading a book that has nothing to do with my blog. These activities can be incredibly rejuvenating. They offer a mental break, stimulate different parts of our brains, and can even bring us back with fresh perspectives and renewed creativity.

The Art of Saying “No” (or “Not Right Now”)

Making space for these essential elements often requires a conscious effort to set boundaries. This might mean:

  • Scheduling “me time” as seriously as you schedule business meetings.
  • Delegating tasks where possible.
  • Learning to say “no” to opportunities that don’t align with your priorities or simply overextend you.
  • Allowing yourself grace when you need to step back. The blog or socials will still be here.

It’s about finding a sustainable rhythm, one that allows you to be passionate and productive, while also nurturing your whole self. Because ultimately, a well-rounded, healthy individual is a more effective and happier blogger, creator, or whatever your chosen path may be.

So, I encourage you to take a moment today and reflect: What are the “other things” in your life that are calling for your attention? How can you intentionally create space for them? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
